A-bombed Tree

Camphor tree
(in the parking lot of the public apartments at Motomachi)
16 Motomachi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima (in the parking lot of the public apartments at Motomachi)

  (2010.4.3)
A large camphor tree between the Ota River and public apartments.
Although the main trunk is damaged by the atomic bomb,
it forms a large hemispherical crown and is shaped like a giant camphor tree.

(2019.5.2)
Because it is the time of leaf rebirth and flowering,
it has the most beautiful color of the year.
I feel that the branches have grown and grown since I visited 9 years ago.

(2022.4.2)
It is the time when the leaves are changing, and the overall color is reddish brown.
From now on, it will be a refreshing shade of fresh green.

(2024.9.1)
This photo was taken from the opposite bank, including the surrounding scenery.
The new soccer stadium started operation this year, and the surrounding atmosphere is changing.
The riverside is a pleasant promenade, so many people enjoy walking and cycling there.

(2025.7.6)

I visited the camphor tree after a long time, and its overall shape hadn’t changed much.
The trash around its base was gone, and dayflowers were now blooming with vibrant blue petals.
On the riverside, new shoots had grown quite large.
The tree might eventually become multi-stemmed.

Similar growth was seen on the camphor tree in front of the Motomachi police box,
and such changes seem to be appearing more frequently lately.
Nearly 80 years have passed since the atomic bombing?perhaps this is part of a cyclical transformation.
Judging by the growth, it may have started a few years ago.
The leaves are lush, and the tree looks healthy overall.
The scars likely caused by the bombing might gradually fade as the surrounding growth strengthens.
If the bark is dead, the surrounding tissue may rise and cover it.
I’d like to continue observing its progress.

 <How to visit>

Go out north of Chuo Park and head west. If you come to the front of the river embankment, you will see it on your right.
